Product Upsells, often known as "Recommended products," can help grow your DTC revenue by optimizing the value of every sale. Studies have shown almost 25% higher total revenue per transaction when offering product recommendations.
Recommended products can be added to entice customers to explore and add more products to their cart, increasing the average transaction value (ATV). With this feature, you can choose on a product-by-product basis to either manually curate a list of recommended wines, or use the auto-match feature to automate the recommendation process.
In a 2022 study*, it was found that.
84% of online shoppers report that personalization influences their purchases and even more, 88%, are more likely to continue shopping on a retailer website that offers a personalized experience.
68% of online shoppers have purchased an item they didn't initially intend to on a retailer's website when product recommendations were personalized.
84% of shoppers report that personalization already influences their decision to shop with specific brands.
42% of shoppers report that targeted promotions and sales notifications were the most influential factor in their decision to purchase from a particular brand.
73% of Gen Z and Millennials expect online retailers to provide this experience.
Product Upsells appear in several areas, one member area, and a staff-only area.
1. 'Buy More & Save More' on the Wine notes page
The recommended wines are displayed in a separate section just below each wine on the tasting notes page, in a section called 'Buy More & Save More...'. These wines can be automatically recommended based on our algorithm, or you can set them manually.
2. Offer Alternate Products for Sold Out Items
Help customers find alternate wines when something is out of stock so you don't lose the sale.
3. Upsell Membership by Showing Member-only Wines
Flag member-only wines and upsell membership
4. Show Members Personalized Recommendations
When a member is logged in, the recommendation bot will recommend wines based on the member's past purchases, also adding a touch of personalization, greeting them by name.
5. Cross-sell on the Checkout Page
Promote other wines the customer may like or best-selling and featured win
6. Staff Recommendations for Tastings

Setting up Product Upsells
When the Product Upsells Feature is available, the recommended wines can be set to recommend automatically, or you can set them manually.
Map Wines Manually
From the product edit page, click on the 'Product Upsells' tab, then click the blue 'Add; button next to any wine you want to feature, so it appears under the 'Wines Like This' column. Once you have the wines set that you want to feature as product upsells, then click Save. Make sure there are at least 4 if you manually set them. Once the manual mapping is configured, it will not complete it with auto-match so if you only do one, only one wine will appear in the suggestions.
Reciprocal option - When you manually add wine mapping there is an option to check next to each wine to set it also as a reciprocal match. This means you also selecting the main wine to be featured as a product upsell for the wine that you have added. So using the example below, if you were to add Cab Franc as a product upsell wine for the main Barbera wine, and then check the Reciprocal box, the Barbera wine would also be promoted in the product upsell section of the Cab Franc wine.
Map Wines Automatically
First, this option must be enabled. Go to General Settings > Settings, and search for or scroll down to the 'Enable Auto Match' setting. When toggled on, for any of your wines where you have not manually mapped wines, VinesOS will automatically select and display those wines that most closely match the selected wine, based on varietal, price point, wine category, and other variables. You can see the algorithm details below.
Automatch Bot Rules for Recommending Wines
This is the algorithm for what wines will be mapped:
1 - Display 4 wines that are either set as featured or as a new release, from the same varietal ordered by closest price.
2 - If not enough, get the remaining matching 4 from the same varietal ordered by the closest price.
3 - If not enough, get the remaining from the same category, ordered by the closest price.
4 - If not enough, get the remaining allowing different varietals and categories, ordered by best selling.
5 - Display Member-only badge on recommended matches that are member-only.
Automatch Bot Rules for Recommending Wines for Members Logged-in
This is the algorithm for recommending wines to members when they are logged in:
1 - Display 4 wines from the member's orders in the same season as last year ordered by best sellers first.
2 - If not enough, also show those that are similar to the general Automatch Bot Rules above, but now allowing admin upsells, if set, for wines returned in rule 1.
3 - If not enough, get the rest from the like that auto rules (based on the checkout algorithm but allowing admin upsells if set) for wines that the member subscribed to or added customized in club order in the past.
4 - If not enough, get the rest from the like that auto rules (based on the checkout algorithm but allowing admin upsells if set) for wine that the member already bought.
5 - If not enough, get the rest (until 4) from the season's best-sellers.
All rules consider: Include only published + members only, do not include sold-out wines, and do not include wines to which the member already has a subscription.
