Wineries must pay a CA Redemption Value Fee (CRV) for DTC sales in California. The fee is 0.05 for 24oz or less and $0.10 for 750ml and magnum bottles sold within the state of CA. Also, by law, the CRV fee is supposed to be taxed. VinesOS has a setting to pass along the CRV and CRV tax to consumers in the form of a surcharge automatically applied at checkout.
ALL States - Pass Along CRV For Wines Shipped to CA
1. Apply In General Settings
To enable this setting, click on Settings > General Settings. Scroll to the 'Cart' section and toggle on 'Charge Bottle CRV Fee'. This will automatically apply the fee at checkout for every bottle of wine shipped in California, whether completed in the online shop or a Ship-To order completed on the POS.
2. Set CRV Fee by Product Type (ie, Wine, Beer)
After enabling the Charge bottle CRV fee in General Settings, check the default product type so the system automatically applies the correct CRV at checkout. Click on Dashboard > Settings and then 'Wine'. Scroll down to 'Unit Type'. If you leave this as 'Bottle', the CRV will default to a standard $0.10 for 750ml. The tax on CRV is automatically set to the same rate as the wine tax rate. Do this for each type of product for which you want to charge the CRV fee.
3. Optionally, modify the default CRV Fee for an Individual Product
If you want to set up an individual product, you can do so on the product detail page. For instance, most of your wines are likely 750ml, and you will want the Unity Type set as 'Bottle'. However, you could sell a few wines that are half bottles (375ml). It would make sense to first set the product type in the above step to bulk apply a $0.10 CRV at checkout. You can then go into the few individual wines that are 375ml and edit the setting so a $0.05 fee is charged. From the Dashboard, click Products > Wine. Click on the individual wine and scroll down to 'Product Information. Check the box 'Less than 24oz'. If shipped to California, this product will automatically have a $0.05 charge at checkout.
If you do not want the CRV applied to an individual product, you can enter 'Skip Redemption Value' as the Unit Type, and that fee will not appear at checkout for that item.
How the CRV appears at Checkout
Online Shop
The CRV fee and CRV tax appear once the consumer adds their shipping address at online checkout when California is recognized as the state. The fee and tax are shown as line items in the order called 'CRV fee' and 'CRV Tax,' respectively, and they will sum up all fees for the bottles in the cart.
Tasting Room Orders Shipped to CA Addresses
If a consumer in the tasting room (including all states) orders wine to be shipped to California, the fee will automatically be applied once the California address is entered.
Club Orders for Customers with CA Addresses
The CRV will be automatically applied during club processing and appear on the invoice for club orders with a CA address. Club orders shipped outside of CA will not have the CRV applied.
CA Tasting Rooms Only - Charge the CRV for Bottles To Go
MUST READ: Any wine sold in a winery’s tasting room that is consumed onsite is exempt from Bottle Bill fees and the aforementioned reporting of bottle counts. However, if the sale is ultimately for off-site consumption, the fees for deposits and processing still apply. VinesOS has a setting to charge CRV on the POS.
A: It's automatically set up if you already have set Bottle On-Site vs Bottle To Go (BTG)/ Retail on POS Menu
If your POS menu is set up to separate out Bottles Retail/To Go vs Bottles (on Site), you do not need to take any action. The CRV will be automatically charged to any bottle-to-go order. If you want your menu updated, please reach out to us for this free upgrade.
How to manage Bottles To-Go and Bottles on Site once we have set it for you
Apply Bottle to Go Settings, and the fee will be applied to bottles added to the order to go and not to bottles consumed on site.
B: If you don't have this set on the POS Menu, you can opt to charge the CRV for all bottles sold.
Note! This will apply to ALL POS sales until you set your menu to separate out BTG/Retail sales from Onsite sales. If you do not have this in your current display, please reach out by chat or email to have this feature enabled at no charge. If we enable this for you, you do not need to follow the steps below. Follow the steps below ONLY to add CRV to ALL POS orders unless we have set your menu to be Onsite vs BTG.
1. Apply in POS Settings
To enable this setting, click on POS > Settings. Scroll to 'Charge CRV on POS' and toggle on. This will automatically apply the CRV at checkout on the POS for bottles to go.
2. How the CRV Appears at Checkout
Bottles To Go - POS Orders
Once the POS setting has been enabled for your tasting room in CA, Retail / Bottles To Go will automatically have the CRV added, whereas Bottles (for on-site) will not apply any extra fee. In the example below, only $0.10 was added for one 750ml bottle to go.
Remember to contact us to have your menu set up to differentiate Bottle to Go from Onsite if you want to charge only the CRV fee for Bottles to go.
Club Orders - POS Pickup
If a member comes into the tasting room for a club order pickup, the CRV fee will be a line item on the checkout when you mark the order as picked up.
Send CRV fees to Revel
In Revel: Create a new product called "CRV Fee VinesOS" or something to identify it as the VinesOS fee, which is different from the Revel-generated CRV fee.
This is the Product ID that you will need to copy to enter in VinesOS
In VinesOS, Go to Revel > Establishment, enter the product ID in the CRV fee product ID field, and save.
In Revel, CRV fees will show in two different places:
Vines CRV fees are in the Service Fee report.
Revel CRV fees are in the Operations report.
CRV in Exports
The CRV charged and CRV tax can be viewed in the Default Summary export created from the Orders page in VinesOS.
