How to configure modifiers and options for food items in the POS

Updated over a week ago

You can use Modifiers and Options to include required options such as selecting a thin or thick crust for a pizza, and flexible attributes, such as adding extra pizza toppings, like extra cheese or mushrooms. These options will print on the Kitchen receipts to let prep staff know how to prepare the order.

Options

Options are created to serve as base-level selections when you want a customer to make a single choice. Options can not have a surcharge. For example, a burger requires a temperature option such as rare, medium, or well done. In this example, the customer needs to select a single choice only.

Creating New Options in Settings

Options are created on the Food Settings page. From the VinesOS sidebar, go to Dashboard > Settings, and then select Food. In the food setting, you can view all necessary options related to your menu. Add/remove as you need, then save any changes. In the next section, we will review how to apply these options to individual menu items.

Add Options to Menu Items

Once you have created an option, then you need to add the option to a menu item. The easiest way to do this: From the POS, click on the pencil edit icon located in the upper right-hand corner of the food item. ** Please note this icon only appears on desktops, not iPads. On the product page, scroll down to the 'product information' section. There, you can find all existing options and add or remove choices for each option listed. For example, adjusting the available choices for the Meat Temperature Option (Rare, Medium, Medium Well, Well Done).

Modifiers

Modifiers can be free or paid, and staff can add multiple modifiers to a food item. For example, if you were offering a pizza with multiple topping modifiers such as mushrooms, pineapple, extra meat, extra cheese, etc. In this example, the customer can select one or more custom modifiers to build their pizza order. Some items may be free to add, such as No ketchup, and some can have a surcharge, such as 'Truffle oil'.

As a matter of convenience, Modifiers can (optionally) be added as a separate tab in the POS menu bar to allow staff to view and add existing modifiers to the order.

Creating New Modifiers

To add a new food modifier, from the VinesOS sidebar, go to Products > Other Products > Products Manager. In the Add Product dropdown, select Modifiers. Then, add your new modifier.

First, enter a title for the modifier (e.g., grilled onions), then scroll down and enter a price in the 'regular price' field. Save the page.

Add Modifiers to Food Items

Once a modifier has been created, you can decide which menu items to add them to. From the POS, click on the pencil edit icon located in the upper right-hand corner of the food item. ** Please note this icon only appears on desktops, not iPads. Then click on the dedicated Modifiers tab. Here, you can search for and add available modifiers. You can also uncheck a modifier to remove it from a food item.

And now you are ready to order with ease!
